Dr. Kim Flanders- Founder and President
Dr. Flanders is a Registered Nurse with over 25 years of experience in Healthcare Administration. She is also a Dyslexia Consultant, Screener and Professional Development Provider through the Illinois State Board of Education. After experiencing first hand the knowledge gap with the education system and dyslexia awareness, she developed a passion for helping others gifted with dyslexia. Dr. Flanders is married with 3 children, one of whom is dyslexic. She is well-versed in evidence based interventions specific to dyslexia and has gained experience in advocating for the interventions needed to achieve academic success.
Dr. Devin Carr- Vice-President
Dr. Carr has over 25 years in health care as a clinician, educator, and leader having worked in a variety of hospital systems and academic institutions. Currently, Dr. Carr serves as the Administrative Director for the Chief Nursing Officer for the University Hospital and Frankel Cardiovascular Center at the University of Michigan. He has published on a variety of topics related to quality, patient safety, and leadership and routinely serves as a peer reviewer/content expert for several nursing publications and has lectured extensively throughout the United States, Canada, and Japan. In 2015, Dr. Carr was invited to join the International Learning Collaborative – an organization committed to transforming health care delivery with an emphasis on promoting fundamentals of care.
Joanna Roper - Board Member
Mrs. Roper holds Bachelor's degrees in English, Library Science and Business. She is a graduate of Washington Community High School, Washington, Illinois, and Western Illinois University. Mrs. Roper taught Reading and English at the high school level for 42 years, 35 of those years at Washington Community High School before retiring in 2007. Mrs. Roper owns and operates Roper Dyslexia Services, established in 2006 and became a certified dyslexia tutor in 2007. She has provided tutoring and assessment services to hundreds of students across the state of Illinois and is a well known advocate, professional Dyslexia Consultant and expert in the area of dyslexia. Mrs Roper was a Professional Development Provider for the Illinois State Board of Education for 20 years and is an active member of the International Dyslexia Association.
Melissa Garretson- Secretary
Ms. Garretson holds a Bachelors of Science degree in Elementary Education, a Masters of Science degree in Educational Administration and has over 22 years of professional experience in the public school setting. After a personal experience seeking information and resources for a family member, later diagnosed with dyslexia, Ms. Garretson realized the knowledge gap in our educational system. She began to study evidence-based interventions known to effectively teach those with dyslexia to read, write and spell. Mrs. Garretson is a certified Barton tutor and a professional Dyslexia Consultant and Screener, assisting hundreds of families across Central Illinois. In 2009, Ms. Garretson began speaking across Central Illinois, creating awareness and educating parents, teachers and administrators on this inherited learning difference affecting 1 out of 5 people. She currently tutors and spreads awareness working as an independent consultant full time with a passion to help all those impacted with dyslexia.
